Phases of Learning

Children’s learning in the early childhood phase (K-Year 3) provides the foundation for lifelong learning. This phase is characterised by children’s rapid rate of growth, learning and development; learning is highly dependent on children’s interaction and relationships within the home and school. In the early childhood phase constructed play experiences and interactions develop social competence and emotional well being.

Students in the middle childhood phase (Year 4-7) of development begin to see themselves as members of larger communities. They work collaboratively and have greater interaction with people inside and outside their classroom. They begin to understand and appreciate different points of view and are interested in people from other times, places and cultures.

Learning dispositions are habits of mind that underpin ways of making sense of, and acting in the world. In early childhood the development of learning dispositions is paramount for learning and making sense of learning experiences. As children move into the middle childhood phase learning dispositions are manifested in attitudes to learning and the learning process. Examples of learning dispositions include: being curious, resourceful, communicative, cooperative, purposeful, persistent and courageous.

Teaching and Learning

Our teachers use their expertise to establish a supportive learning environment, identify their students’ learning needs, and make decisions on what to teach and how to teach it. In doing this, they draw on everything they know about their students, about the curriculum and about good teaching practice. They work in partnership with other teachers, students, their families and the community.

Our teachers recognise the key to successful students and effective classroom is to incorporate the Curriculum Framework’ s SevenPrinciple’s of effective learning and teaching in their classroom planning and activities.
